How many Polish dialects are they?
Polish has several variations of dialects, and are generally classified into four, namely, Greater Polish, Lesser Polish, Masovian and Silesian. Other variations include the Podhale dialect, Poznanski dialect, Warsaw dialect, among others.
Polish is written in the Polish alphabet. It is a derivation from Latin, but with additional characters.
In Polish grammar, the general word order is subject- verb- object. However, syntax is for the most part free order of words. Nouns have three genders and seven cases, and adjectives follow nouns in terms of number, gender and case. Verbs usually come in pairs, and are either imperfective or perfective.
Loan words or borrow words have become an increasing trend in the Polish language, with most of the loan words originating from English. Spelling is usually altered according to the pronunciation using Polish phonetics. Words endings are applied to create nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Some examples of loan words are komputer and skaner. Parkować is an example of a loan word with added word ending. It means “to park” with a common word ending -ować.
When translating
When translating, it is important to note that some words in Polish might look like loan words but in actuality they’re different. Take for example the word “Dres”, which in Polish literally means a tracksuit, the word “Ordynarny” which in English actually means “vulgar”, and the word “prezerwatywa” which means “condom”. Some Polish words are also confusing: dziękuję (meaning ‘thank you’) and dzień dobry (meaning ‘have a good day’).
