National Register for Interpreters

Firstly, The NRPSI or the National Register of Public Service Interpreters is an independent association that regulates interpreters working with public services. In the past it was administered by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) and became independent in April 2011.

The NRPSI also maintains a list of registered professional public interpreters. Hiring an interpreter who has the accreditation by the national register for interpreters assures you that they have a professional qualification. Also, in the case of misconduct or any other concerns about their service, NSPSI  will allow you to file a formal complaint. The association will process the complaint.

Moreover, The association has a very specific criteria for entry.

Also for full status interpreters:

  • IoL Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) / IoL CCI; or
  • Metropolitan Police Test (post 1997); or
  • Equivalent Level Interpreting Qualification at Honours Degree level
  • More than 400 hours of proven Public Service Interpreting (PSI) experience in the UK

Meanwhile for interim status interpreters, check these options :

  • Option A:
    • IoL Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) / IoL CCI; or
    • Metropolitan Police Test (post 1997); or
    • Equivalent Level Interpreting Qualification at Honours Degree level
    • No required hours of PSI
  • Option B:
    • A degree partly studied in English with at least one interpreting and one translation component; and
    • 400 hours of proven Public Service Interpreting (PSI) experience in the UK

Otherwise, For rare language interpreters:

  • Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) or equivalent qualification.
  • Annual review – you will be required to provide evidence of ContinuedProfessional Development (CPD)
  • 100 hours of proven Public Service Interpreting (PSI) experience undertaken in the UK, with annual  reviews.
