Tips for Speakers

Speaking in front of an audience is not at all easy, and is made more complex if your audience speaks various languages. If this is the case, then your company or school will most likely have hired a few interpreters.

Here are a few tips for speakers:

Tip #1 – The microphone is your connection to the interpreters’ booths. This is probably one of the most basic tips for speakers.  If you turn away from the lectern, you should use a wireless pendant microphone.  This also applies for panel discussions, roundtables, contributions from the audience or the like.

The microphone should always be turned on.

Otherwise that will kill your contact to the subscribers of other languages.

Tip #2 – Be conscious about your rate of speech when you’re reading from the manuscript.  This makes it harder not only for the interpreters but also for the listeners who do not need interpretation, to capture the content.  Give your listeners a chance to follow you on all points effortlessly.

Tip #3 – Everything you use in your presentation is also good for your interpreter.  If you will read from a manuscript or stick to your notes, you should provide a copy to the Conference Secretariat or the organizing interpreters.  Multimedia content of the demonstrations are often further away from booths and are hardly recognizable.    If you want to show a movie, it is extremely important that the interpreter has the movie script or a  digital copy of the film (DVD, CD).
