Writing was developed sometime between the 7th and 4th century BC. Its earliest forms were mnemonic symbols, with this came the bible. These symbols became a system of ideograms or pictographs.
Stones were used as the earliest form of writing. However, wood is probably the first medium of writing to look close to a book as we know it today.
Basically, in the ancient times, books constitute any material where people can write, that will hold and transmit the text.
What was the first book written?
Experts believe that Genesis was the first book ever written, but some accounts contradict this and say that the bible verses are older than that.
The first known written story is The Epic of Gilamesh. It is a myth about Gilamesh, a historical figure who ruled Uruk, a Sumerian city-state, sometime between 2700 to 2500 BC. However, some scholars believe that this book may be a transcription of older Sumerian texts.
The first book – major book – written in the west using movable type is the Gutenberg Bible. You can also find it as a bible app. The booked marked the start of the Gutenberg Revolution – or Printing Revolution, as well as the era of printed books. The Gutenberg Bible was written in Latin, and printed in Germany in the 1450s.
Today, with the rise of e-books and bible apps, the definition of a “book” has gotten a little more complex and flexible.
